Satit Bilingual School held its annual Science trip for M4-6 students on December 10 to 12, 2009 with an expedition to the Khao Yai region. It was an opportunity for the students to discover nature outside of the busy school life at SBS. The trip included a hike through the hills area to observe the wide variety of plant and animal life in the forest such as the gibbon and hornbill.
We encountered many exotic forms of trees and small plants. Too bad that most of the animals were hiding from the enthusiastic students! Fortunately, we saw hornbills and gibbons as they ate. For the entire trip, students enjoyed the adventure trails and steppes area.
At the end of the trip, the students participated in working salt into the soil for a man-made elephant salt lick (a salt lick provides animals important nutrients such as sodium, calcium, iron, phosphorous and zinc for bone and muscle growth. Elephants visit the area and lick or eat the soil. We’re sure the elephants that night appreciated the salt.
The exhausted students returned back to the lodges to rest and prepare for the events that evening.
In the evening, students enjoyed a view of the stars through a high-power portable telescope.
Our expert guide, Mr. Peerasilp Sudtanakit (Peter), showed us many amazing sites. Many students spent almost the entire night waiting for the beautiful stars. We really appreciated his knowledge and facilities given to us.
One of the favorites was seeing the rings of Saturn. You can visit his website at www.sunflowercosmos.org.
Thank you for the opportunities given from the SBS School.
